How to Measure Yourself for a Dress

Five minutes and a measuring tape: how to take your bust, waist and hip measurements and choose the right dress size online.

Sizes vary between brands and countries, so the most reliable way to find the right dress online is to compare your own measurements with the size chart. It takes five minutes. Here is how.

What you need

A soft measuring tape, a mirror and ideally someone to help. Wear thin clothing or underwear, and the bra you plan to wear with the dress.

1. Bust

Stand straight with your arms relaxed. Measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level across your back. It should sit snugly without squeezing.

2. Waist

Find your natural waist, the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the belly button. Breathe out normally and measure without pulling the tape tight.

3. High hip

Measure around your hips about 10 cm (4 inches) below your waist, at the top of the hip bones. This matters for fitted dresses that sit close to the body.

4. Low hip

Stand with your feet together and measure around the widest part of your hips and bottom.

5. Length

For maxi dresses, measure from the top of your shoulder to the floor while wearing the shoes you plan to wear. This shows you whether a long dress will need hemming.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring over thick clothing, which adds several centimetres.
  • Letting the tape tilt at the back.
  • Pulling the tape too tight. Fitted dresses still need room to breathe and sit down.
  • Guessing your size from another brand instead of measuring.

Between two sizes?

Choose the larger size. A tailor can easily take a dress in, but it is rarely possible to let one out. For a relaxed fit, or for dresses with little stretch such as satin or sequins, order one size up.
