How to Wear a Blazer Dress for Every Occasion

Sharp, sleek and surprisingly versatile: here is what a blazer dress is and how to style one from the office party to a wedding.

A blazer dress combines the tailoring of a jacket with the ease of a dress. It is one of the most versatile pieces you can own: power-dressing at a work event, chic at a cocktail party and modern at a wedding.

What is a blazer dress?

A blazer dress is cut like a longer, fitted blazer, with lapels, structured shoulders and usually buttons or a wrap fastening. It can be single- or double-breasted, short or midi length, and is often finished with statement buttons, a belt or embellished details. Because it is designed to be worn on its own, it covers more than a regular blazer and is lined for a smooth fit.

For work events and conferences

Choose classic colours such as black, navy, camel, ivory or grey, and a length that reaches mid-thigh or lower. Pair it with pointed pumps or loafers and simple gold or pearl earrings. A blazer dress looks put-together without being too formal, ideal for an awards evening or a company dinner.

For cocktail parties

This is where blazer dresses really shine. Go for satin, sequin or bold colours like hot pink, cobalt or emerald, and add strappy heels, a mini clutch and statement earrings. Leave a button undone at the neck or wear it with a deep V for a more evening feel.

For weddings

A blazer dress is a fresh alternative to a floral dress. Pick a soft pastel or a rich jewel tone, avoid white and ivory, and add elegant heels and a structured bag. For more guest rules, see our wedding guest dress code guide.

Belting, shoes and legs

  • Belting: a slim belt at the natural waist adds shape to a straight blazer dress. A chain or gold-buckle belt dresses it up.
  • Shoes: pointed pumps lengthen the leg; strappy sandals feel more evening; knee or ankle boots suit cooler days.
  • Tights or bare legs: sheer black tights look chic with a dark blazer dress in winter. With pastels or for summer weddings, bare legs or skin-tone sheer tights look fresher.

Layering for modesty

Blazer dresses are easy to adapt for a modest look. Wear a fine high-neck top or a silk camisole under a deep V-neck, and add slim trousers or a slip skirt under a short style for full coverage. A midi or ankle-length blazer dress with long sleeves already feels covered and elegant. Our modest dresses and our modest evening dress guide have more ideas.

Getting the fit right

Tailoring only works if it fits. The shoulders should sit at the edge of your own shoulders, and the buttons should close without pulling. Check the size guide on each product page and, if you are between sizes, choose the larger one.
