Makeup for a Sequin or Glitter Dress

A sparkling dress changes the rules for makeup. Here is how to choose your base, eyes, lips and hair so your face shines as much as your sequins.

Sequins reflect light onto your face, so the makeup that looks perfect with a plain dress can suddenly seem too much, or too little. The key is balance: let the dress be the sparkle and use makeup to look radiant, not glittery from head to toe.

Skin: radiant, not shiny

Aim for a satin finish. A very matte base can look flat next to shimmering fabric, while too much highlighter competes with the sequins and can look greasy in photos. Use a hydrating primer, a light-to-medium foundation, set the T-zone and add a soft cream highlighter only on the top of the cheekbones. A touch of blush keeps you from looking washed out.

Eyes

  • Soft shimmer: a metallic shade on the lid that echoes the dress colour, with matte tones in the crease.
  • Defined liner: a smudged or winged liner with lashes is chic and lets the dress shine.
  • Smoky eye: works well with black and silver sequins, kept in brown or charcoal rather than black glitter.
  • Avoid: chunky loose glitter on the eyes with an all-over sequin dress.

Lips

Choose either a statement eye or a statement lip. A satin or creamy finish photographs better than heavy gloss with sequins. Nude-rose, berry and classic red are the safest options.

How much sparkle?

A simple rule: the more sequins on the dress, the less sparkle on your face. With a dress covered in sequins, keep sparkle to one small accent, like a shimmer on the inner corner. With subtle sequin detailing, you can be more playful on the lids.

Matching makeup to the dress colour

  • Gold sequins: warm bronze and copper eyes, peachy blush and a nude or terracotta lip.
  • Silver sequins: cool taupe, grey or soft silver on the eyes, a pink or berry lip.
  • Black sequins: the most flexible: a smoky eye with a nude lip, or clean skin and a red lip.
  • Colourful sequins: keep eyes neutral and take the lip from a soft complementary tone; avoid matching eyeshadow to a bright dress exactly.

Hair

Sleek styles look polished with sequins: a low bun, a glossy ponytail or a sharp middle part. Soft waves add romance. Keep hair accessories minimal, as sparkling clips plus sequins can be too much. Our hairstyles by neckline guide has more ideas.
