Bodycon and corset dresses are made to celebrate your shape. They are a go-to for birthdays, nights out, prom and parties, and they can look sophisticated or bold depending on how you style them. Here is how to wear one with confidence.
Bodycon vs corset: what is the difference?
- Bodycon dresses are made from stretch fabrics that hug the body from top to hem. They move with you and are comfortable for dancing.
- Corset dresses have a structured bodice, often with boning, a sweetheart neckline or lace-up details. They shape the waist and support the bust, then often flow into a looser or straighter skirt.
Both are popular as mini dresses, but you will also find corset bodices on midi and floor-length styles.
Getting the fit right
Fit is everything with figure-hugging styles. Measure your bust, waist and hips and compare them with the size guide on the product page. A bodycon should feel snug but should not wrinkle across the stomach or ride up when you walk. A corset bodice should sit flat against the body with no gaping at the top edge, and you should be able to breathe and sit comfortably. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one. Our guide on how to measure yourself for a dress shows you how.
What to wear underneath
Seamless, skin-tone underwear is a must, as lace and visible seams show through stretch fabric. Many corset dresses have built-in support, so you may not need a bra at all; if you do, a strapless or low-back style is best. Light shaping shorts can give a smoother line under a thin bodycon, but they are optional.
Balancing the look
Because the silhouette is so fitted, keep the rest simple. Pair a bright or sparkly dress with neutral heels and small jewellery. Add an oversized blazer or a cropped jacket for a more relaxed, modern feel. A longer bodycon or a corset midi feels more polished for weddings and dinners, while a short mini suits clubs and birthday parties.
Occasions
- Night out and birthdays: a bodycon mini with heels or boots.
- Prom and formal events: a corset bodice with a long skirt, in satin or sequins.
- Weddings: a corset midi in a soft colour, never white.
- New Year's Eve: a sparkly corset mini, see our NYE dress guide.
Comfort tips
Wear the dress at home for an hour before the event to check it feels right when you sit, walk and eat. Bring a light layer, as fitted fabrics do not leave room for a jumper underneath. Finally, choose shoes you can stand in for hours, because confidence is the best accessory.
